If you have a parent or loved one nearing the age when senior living may be a beneficial housing option, planning ahead is crucial to avoiding lengthy wait times and unnecessary expenses.

Below are eight upcoming new-build seniors' housing options, totaling 1,020 units, from across Victoria and southern Vancouver Island that you should know about.

701 Belleville Street - downtown Victoria
Concert Properties is currently in the municipal planning stage for a 15-storey, 173-unit mixed-use rental, condo and ground floor commercial tower in the 700-block of Belleville Street. The building will feature services and accommodations suited to seniors in a centrally located downtown Victoria location. Approvals are expected later this year, with a construction start slated for 2017 and completion in 2019.

Cherish at Central Park - Langford
Under construction on Jacklin Road at Jenkins Avenue in Langford, Cherish at Central Park is a 169-unit, six-storey seniors residence comprised of a mix of rental apartments and market condos. Developer Cherish Living Group will be providing independent or assisted living options for residents, together with residential care services. A Lutheran church will be situated on the building’s ground floor. Construction is expected to be completed in 2017.

Roberts Landing - Langford
This six-storey rental apartment nearing completion on Hockley Avenue in Langford features 20 two-bedroom corner units with age-in-place construction geared towards older adults and seniors. Construction is expected to be completed this fall.

Saanich Seniors’ Care Complex - Saanich
Rising at the intersection of Gorge Road West and Admirals Road is Saanich Senior Living’s 142-unit Saanich Seniors’ Care Complex. The facility will provide independent supported living, assisted living and community care units overlooking the Gorge Waterway. The four-storey building is expected to welcome its first tenants next year.

The Summit at Quadra Village - Victoria
This 320-bed CRD care facility on Hillside Avenue between Blanshard and Quadra streets will provide seniors with a wide-range of services, including dementia care and fully assisted living. The four-storey building is expected to get underway this summer with completion in 2018. The Summit will replace the CRD’s Oak Bay Lodge and Mt. Tolmie Hospital facilities.

Cottage Grove - Saanich
The Victoria Cool Aid Society is nearing the completion of Cottage Grove, a four-storey, 45-unit affordable seniors home on Quadra Street at Tolmie Avenue. The affordable units are geared towards vulnerable seniors at-risk of homelessness. Residents will benefit from an outdoor space, a communal kitchen and a communal dining space.

Townley Place Passivehaus - Saanich
The Greater Victoria Housing Society is proposing a redevelopment of its Townley Place facility off Shelbourne Street near Hillside Avenue. Townley Place Passivehaus will replace an existing two-storey seniors residence with an adaptable 51-unit low-income complex for seniors and persons with disabilities. Designed to eco-friendly and low energy use Passivehaus standards, the seniors residence will be the first of its kind in Canada. Construction is expected to be completed in 2019.

1550 Arrow Road - Saanich
100-units of affordable seniors rentals are planned for an empty lot adjacent to an existing seniors residence along Arrow Road in Saanich’s Gordon Head neighbourhood. The three-storey proposal, by Mount Douglas Seniors Housing Society, is currently going through the municipal process. Construction may begin as early as this year with completion by 2017 or 2018.
