A duo of affordable housing projects have gotten underway on the Westshore in recent days, adding to the 162-units already under construction and several hundred recently completed.

284 Belmont Road in Colwood celebrated its groundbreaking earlier this week with the launch of 48 one and two-bedroom below-market rental suites supplanted by BC Housing’s HousingHub program. HousingHub aims to create affordable rental apartments and condominium ownership opportunities throughout the province.

"These new homes for middle-income families will increase the diversity of housing choice in Colwood," said Rob Martin, mayor of Colwood. "We want Colwood residents to be able to live in our community throughout their lives, and that includes having affordable rental options for young adults, families starting out, seniors needing to downsize and people on fixed incomes.”

Rents will range between $1,300 and $1,650.

The province has earmarked $9.7 million towards the four-storey project, which is being developed by Stride Properties with completion earmarked for 2020.

On Langford’s 2700-block of Spencer Road construction has begun on a $36 million, 130-unit six-storey complex under the direction of the Capital Region Housing Corporation with financial support from BC Housing.

The building will consist of 13 accessible units, 26 units with provincial assistance, 40 affordable suites and 64 near-market residences. Construction is expected to complete by late 2020 or early 2021. No estimated rental rates have been disclosed.

The 178 new residences will join just over 160 affordable homes rising at 330 Goldstream Avenue in Colwood and at 731 Station Avenue in Langford. Since 2016 the Westshore has seen the creation of 365 below-market affordable rental apartments, while several hundred more are currently in planning and expected to come online by 2023. C
