One of the Capital’s largest developers of new housing has received a coveted honour from the Victoria Residential Builders Association (VRBA) recognizing leaders in sustainable West Coast design and construction.

Victoria-based Abstract Developments, with multiple residential projects underway and in planning throughout the region, has been named Green Builder of the Year at VRBA’s 30th annual CARE Awards hosted by CFAX 1070 at the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

“The ability to celebrate the achievements of our peers in the development and construction industries is always inspiring, and I would like to congratulate the other winners” said Mike Miller, President and CEO of Abstract Developments. “We are especially proud to be named Green Builder of the Year by the VRBA given the commitment our company has made to sustainable building practices.”

The Green Builder of the Year recognition highlights the contributions of the Island’s residential builders towards environmental stewardship and ‘green’ building practices lowering the impact of new construction while increasing sustainability and efficiency of modern homes.

Miller says Abstract’s focus has been to approach its developments not only from a sustainable development and construction perspective, but to also leverage alternative transportation options for the future residents at the company’s projects and situate its residential communities near retail destinations.

“We are in the midst of a climate crisis, which makes acting as leaders in sustainable building practices extremely important to us,” said Miller. “While locating new higher density housing options near existing services and infrastructure can help reduce greenhouse gases, additional considerations like rain gardens, high efficiency fixtures, and electric vehicle charging help to reduce the carbon footprint of our projects.”

Abstract’s commitment to environmental construction practices has embraced a new generation of sustainable building code standards known as the BC Energy Step Code, which aims to provide a framework for builders to achieve energy efficiency through advancements in building design and construction.

The company has committed to reaching a minimum Step Code 3 level at each of its projects, which yields a 50% increase in energy efficiency over the standard BC Building Code requirements.

In addition to Abstract’s Green Builder Award, the company also received recognition at this year’s CARE Awards for its Bowker Collection condominium and retail development in Oak Bay, by securing the Project of the Year - Multi-Family, Best Condominium Project or Mixed-Use Development, Best Overall Marketing Campaign, and Best Innovative Feature award for the mixed-use project. Abstract’s Avery Lane townhome development, meanwhile, was recognized under the Best Multi-Family / Townhouse Project category.

Abstract Developments is currently finalizing construction of its Bellewood Park condominium and townhome community on upper Fort Street, and work is underway on Sparrow, a sold-out condominium on Hillside Avenue at Cook Street. The marketing campaign for Abstract’s newest project, known as Cadence, has begun for a condominium earmarked for Quadra Street at Palmer Road in Saanich.

In over 20 years, Abstract has built over 500 residences throughout the Capital Region and has been recognized with more than 50 local and national awards for design, customer care and development planning. C
