A 12-storey mixed-use tower has been proposed for Saanich’s high Quadra community on Quadra Street at Nicholson Street north of McKenzie Avenue.
The proposal for the 4000-block of Quadra Street, estimated to include between 100 and 120 units according to documents filed with the District, would stand as the tallest building in the area, if approved, and will deliver commercial spaces to a portion of Quadra Street that is primarily made up of single-family homes and lowrise apartments.
Designed by Victoria-based Christine Lintott Architects, the building massing has an elongated frontage along its north and south facades, with a thin profile east to west. Landscaping, including play areas for children, is depicted for the southeast corner of the roughly third of an acre property.
The District of Saanich’s public information pertaining to the project does not currently include the make-up of units, the total unit count, or material/finishing details. The local community association for the North Quadra neighbourhood does not have additional details, at this time. More information will be forthcoming as the proposal moves through the municipal approvals process.
The District of Saanich has numerous highrise towers in planning, including a recently approved 24-storey rental block at Uptown Shopping Centre, and three towers at the former Mayfair Lanes property on Oak Street at Tolmie Avenue proposed at heights between 21 and 24 storeys.
In the Royal Oak neighbourhood, a proposal for a 12-storey condominium project is moving through the approvals process, while the District and the provincial government are pursuing an investment at the Nellie McClung Library, that could see the land transformed into an 18-storey affordable rental tower along with a modern library.
In the Uptown area, the Province is moving forward on a high density housing project as part of a transit exchange on Carey Road at Highway 1. Details of that proposal, including building heights, are forthcoming. Not far from Uptown Shopping Centre on Ravine Way at Vernon Avenue, future plans for a social housing precinct may include a highrise tower, although no building heights have been decided. C
