Skateboarders on the Saanich Peninsula are one step closer to kickflips and boardslides at a new skatepark as crews prepare for preliminary soil work at Sidney’s Tulista Park.
Approved earlier this year for the north end of the popular 5th Street green space, a $300,000 skateboarding facility will be ready for skaters of all ages by the spring of 2017. A six month soil preparation process will begin in several weeks with a construction start planned for February of next year.
The decision to build a new skatepark was borne out of Sidney’s plans to replace the existing facility, situated at 8th Street and Oakville Avenue, with overflow parking to the south of an upcoming fire hall and public services building near Mary Winspear Centre.
Sidney awarded the design contract to New Line Skateparks, a company responsible for Vic West’s Esquimalt Road skatepark and over 200 similar facilities world-wide.
Throughout the capital region the municipalities of Saanich, Sidney, Sooke and Victoria are home to skateparks. Earlier this year Sobeys Inc. ripped up Langford’s Jenkins Avenue skatepark in preparation for construction of its Belmont Market shopping centre on land formerly occupied by Belmont Secondary School. The City of Langford, however, has confirmed it is taking steps to support a replacement facility at Colwood’s Juan de Fuca Rec Centre. C
