An expedited construction timeline for the University of Victoria’s (UVic) 783-bed dormitory, dining and classroom development adjacent to the Student Union complex will see it completed 16 months ahead of schedule.
In an article published by the university, the $201 million project is on-track for completion by 2023 in an effort to supply additional housing inventory for students as fast as possible.
“We’re excited about the opportunity to have these buildings up and running more than a year earlier than we'd originally planned,”says Mike Wilson, director of campus planning and sustainability. “Though there will be some short-term inconvenience and noise associated with such a large construction project, we appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work to achieve our long-term goal of providing additional student housing and increasing the vibrancy of our campus.”

A single phase of construction, in lieu of two, has yielded a shorter development window albeit disruptions to UVic’s parking and student services are expected.
Cadboro Commons, Margaret Newton Hall and Emily Carr Residence will undergo demolition in 2020 to make way for construction, and a temporary modular dining facility on Parking Lot B will be established during construction.
"We will work with anyone with a parking permit who is impacted by this work, to find the best solution for for their parking needs on campus," says Patrick Seward, manager, parking and transportation.
UVic announced its plans to build two mixed-use residences east of Ring Road in the fall of 2018. The development represents the first major infrastructure investment at the university since its Campus Plan was renewed in 2016. C
