The University of Victoria has wrapped up public engagement concerning a future on-campus dormitory planned for Sinclair Road near Clarndon Road on a portion of Parking Lot 5, Citified has learned.
UVic has unveiled plans to build a 500-bed residential facility for upper year undergraduate and graduate students on a site immediately east of its most recent housing and dining project, known as Cheko’nien House and Sngequ House. Collectively, the two residences delivered approximately 600 net new beds in 2023 in the form of two mid-rise towers, and represent the largest single infusion of student housing in the university’s history.
Now, campus planners say additional mid-rise or highrise buildings are under consideration in order to meet housing needs of a more diverse range of students, while preserving green space and ensuring financial viability through high density massing.
With consultation complete, the design of the building will get underway this spring through the fall, and construction, pending financial supports from government, is planned for a spring 2026 start. Occupancy is expected to occur in 2029, provided the design and construction phases proceed as scheduled.
Meanwhile, construction at UVic is proceeding on two projects that will deliver expanded institutional and learning spaces at the Fraser Building, where a National Centre for Indigenous Laws will open this spring, and next year an expansion of the Engineering and Computer Science Building will complete with a significant addition to the 1990s-era complex. Planning is also underway for repurposing and redevelopment of the Ian Stewart lands and adjacent properties at the northwest corner of the campus on McKenzie Avenue at Gordon Head Road. C
