Deputy Premier Rich Coleman has announced that upwards of $90 million will be made available for affordable housing initiatives throughout the Capital Regional District (CRD).
Speaking to CFAX 1070AM’s Terry Moore, Coleman confirmed the provincial government has agreed to match the CRD’s planned contribution of $30 million for affordable housing. Coleman also hinted at the likelihood of federal monies becoming available that would push the total to $90 million.
Today’s funding announcement is in addition to continuing efforts to house individuals residing at Super InTent City. To-date 180 people have been provided with housing options since the occupation of the courthouse land began last October.
Present-day construction activity
Southern Vancouver Island’s affordable and subsidized housing industry has experienced a major uplift in construction activity throughout the last year. Currently underway are a total of 260 affordable and/or subsidized rental units among four buildings. 36 additional units were completed last month.
In planning are 350-units throughout the region not including projects anticipated as a result of the $90 million affordable housing initiative. C
