Another retailer has announced its departure from The Hudson District's Victoria Public Market as the downtown commercial node struggles with tenant retention.

Salt Spring Island Cheese Company has confirmed its retail outlet at the market's Douglas Street entrance has ceased operations effective immediately. There is no word on whether the operation will resurface elsewhere in the region.

The sudden closure comes on the heels of Cowichan Bay Seafood's recent announcement that the fishmonger and popular lunch spot will be relocating to Oak Bay Avenue following the upcoming closure of its Victoria Public Market location. The move is a response to seafood processing and handling compliance issues, which stem from the closure of Cowichan Bay Seafood's original location earlier this year where the operator's seafood handling had been previously carried out.

On a positive note, Richmond-based Townline, the developer of The Hudson District, announced the company will be assuming the former Smoken' Bones Cookshack restaurant space at the corner of Douglas and Fisgard streets to use offices for its Victoria operations.

The barbecue restaurant's kitchen will be used by the operators of The Ruby eatery and the recently opened Jones Bar-B-Que diner as a cooking facility for catered events within the market. And last week management at The Grocer at The Hudson changed hands. The operation has since re-opened as The Westcoast Pantry.

The Hudson District is rapidly developing with a recently completed 178-unit rental building, a 106-unit rental highrise underway, and several hundred residences planned as part of an upcoming two-tower condo and purpose-built rental project. C
