North Saanich’s Sandown Park Shopping Centre will open its second phase of stores this summer to become the largest retail plaza on Victoria’s northern Saanich Peninsula.

Already confirmed retailers of Sandown’s four-acre new-build addition along McDonald Park Road at Highway 17 in North Saanich – joining a nearly 49,000 square foot Canadian Tire opened in 2018 – are Red Barn Market, Dollarama, a Springs Group liquor store, a restaurant and a pharmacy.

Of the roughly 47,000 square feet of upcoming retail space, 29,000 square feet has been leased by the aforementioned retailers, while another 7,350 square feet is either under contract or under offer (across five spaces), leaving four retail units available at around 11,000 square feet in total size.

“Once complete, Sandown Park’s Phase 2 will establish a well-rounded and convenient shopping node that is uniquely positioned to service the everyday shopping needs of residents and businesses in the area, as well as traffic along the Pat Bay Highway,” says John Allan of development firm Platform Properties, a partner of the Randall Family which has been a long-time owner of the Sandown lands.

Allan notes that as tenants lock in leases and begin planning for tenant improvements in time for mid-2024 openings, announcements will be issued naming the additional leaseholders.

The first phase of Sandown Park Shopping Centre got underway in 2017, and outpaced plans for a competing retail plaza proposed for Victoria International Airport lands along Stirling Way at Beacon Avenue West approved by the Town of Sidney. The nearly 100,000 project, known as Sidney Crossing, was subsequently cancelled by proponent Omicron. C
