The City of Victoria's plan to locate a new Crystal Pool and Wellness Centre on the parking lot of the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre has fallen through, according to a recently compiled a municipal report.

The vision of situating the $70 million project next to the arena followed an earlier plan to locate the wellness facility immediately south of the existing pool when senior government funds for the project failed to materialize.

Municipal staff have now proposed constructing the pool and wellness centre on excess land at Central Middle School bordered by Yates and Fort streets, Fernwood Road and Ormond Street east of downtown Victoria.

In a statement prepared for council, staff recommend launching a "feasibility study of the Central Middle School site, including the arrangement between the City and School District 61, facility amenities, conceptual design, and cost estimates."

"A study of the school site will allow the City to clarify, in detail, the opportunities and risks associated with constructing the new community facility next to the school. This would include public engagement on the amenities and impacts, along with details on the partnership between the two organizations, as well as other potential stakeholders. Staff recommend the scope of this study include the existing recreation and wellness program developed for the facility, as well as childcare and affordable housing," reads the statement.

A secondary option, according to the report, would be to locate the pool on City-owned surface parking lot at 940 Caledonia Street adjacent to Royal Athletic Park.

Council will be presented with the new options next week. C
