BC Transit eyes View Royal lands for transit depot

BC Transit has identified an eight-acre parcel along the Trans Canada Highway’s Burnside Road and Old Island Highway exit ramp as an ideal site for a future transit operations yard.
The parcel, situated at 2401 Burnside Road West in the Town of View Royal, would be used as BC Transit's handyDART maintenance and parking facility for its Capital Region operations.
handyDART is described as “an accessible, door-to-door shared transit service for people with permanent or temporary disabilities that prevent them from using conventional or fixed-route transit without assistance.”
The initial functional requirements for the yard would retain a “significant potion” of the site as green space and allow the Victoria Bowmen Archery Club to continue using the northern area of the land. The Galloping Goose Regional Trail, which cuts through the property, would also be retained.
BC Transit plans to submit an application to View Royal before the end of the year to amend the town’s Official Community Plan and to rezone the parcel for transit maintenance uses.
An official statement released by BC Transit confirms that an “existing handyDART facility located on Glanford Avenue is operating beyond capacity, and cannot support the expected need for future growth of the service.”
Opportunities for community feedback and informational sessions will be scheduled and promoted by BC Transit on future dates. C
