Three years following the closure of Douglas Street’s Canadian Tire store signs of activity will soon return to the high-profile site in Victoria’s Burnside-Gorge neighbourhood.

Victoria-based GAIN Group, known for its network of automotive dealerships specializing in up-market and luxury foreign brands, has set its sights on the former retail property in the 2900-block of Douglas Street (between Summit and Spruce avenues) with plans to open Volkswagen and Porsche dealerships in newly-built showrooms.

GAIN’s existing Porsche and Volkswagen dealerships are situated on the Saanich side of Douglas Street (at Audley Street). The former Canadian Tire, meanwhile, is adjacent to GAIN’s newly opened Audi and Maserati dealerships.

The company recently approached the City of Victoria to seek approvals for a vehicle storage parkade immediately to the east of the Canadian Tire property with frontage onto Summit Avenue and Nanaimo Street. Plans call for a single underground level and three-storeys of above ground parking for a variety of automotive brands sold by GAIN.

Canadian Tire vacated its Douglas Street store in 2016 and moved its sole City of Victoria location to Hillside Shopping Centre in a two-storey space formerly occupied by Target Canada.

In other local automotive news, downtown Victoria's Pacific Mazda dealership (situated between the 1000-blocks of Yates and Johnson streets at Cook Street) has been sold to Carson Automotive Group. The deal does not include the dealership's real-estate, however, as the land is part of a mixed-use, multi-phased redevelopment effort recently approved by municipal officials. C
