The downtown Victoria location of Floyd’s Diner will be all but a memory come the New Year, Citified has learned.
One of the city centre’s longest-operating breakfast eateries – made famous by its Mahoney double-or-nothing dish and as a greasy cure-all for legions of hung over clientele – will be firing up its grill for the last time on January 1st, according to sources familiar with the closure.
Operating on Yates Street at Quadra Street for over two decades, Floyd’s Diner has been firmly rooted in Victoria’s brunch scene that has produced the likes of Blue Fox on Fort Street, John’s Place on Pandora Avenue, Chinatown’s Mo:Lé and Jam cafés, the duo of Shine Cafés and The Village chain of eateries (with a new location coming soon to Chinatown and Cook Street Village) among many others.
Floyd’s was the first of the pack to export its operations (accompanied by its über bright pink exterior decor) to Langford where it has operated on Station Avenue at Veterans Memorial Parkway since 2011. And earlier this year Floyd’s #3 began welcoming patrons in James Bay at Superior and Menzies streets in the former James Bay Tea Room.
Although no immediate redevelopment effort is in planning for the Floyd’s building along Quadra Street, developers have begun consolidating land parcels adjacent to Floyd's over the last several years with a re-purposing of the high-profile block coming in the not-too-distant future.
For the time being, there is no word on whether Floyd's operators will re-open an alternate location in downtown Victoria or remain focused solely on their Langford and James Bay eateries. C
