A renovation taking place at downtown Victoria's Cineplex Odeon movie theatre in the 700-block of Yates Street has been halted by WorkSafeBC due to the possibility of disturbed asbestos, Citified has learned.
A stop-work order posted to the property, dated April 22nd, alleges construction crews failed to "properly inspect the building and worksite for hazardous materials" prior to proceeding with renovation and remediation activities.
The notice goes on to state that "materials suspected to contain asbestos have been disturbed."
A renovation of the Odeon's cinema five had been on-going for at least several days prior to the work stoppage. WorkSafeBC cites only the one cinema and the theatre's second floor lobby as the focus of the work stoppage.
As of the publication date and time of this article, Cineplex Odeon's management could not be reached for comment to clarify if or how the work stoppage has affected the remainder of the facility and theatrical show times. However, a source familiar with the situation has confirmed cinemas one-through-four continue to screen films. C
