The Mount Douglas Seniors Housing Society is proposing a 100-unit affordable seniors residence at 1550 Arrow Road in Saanich’s Gordon Head neighbourhood.
The three-storey woodframe building is eyed for vacant land adjacent to the Society’s existing 80-unit seniors residence west of University Heights Shopping Centre. The project will offer a mix of studio and one-bedroom rental apartments, with layouts between 393 and 509 square feet, marketed at seniors earning incomes below $30,000 per annum.
Amenities will include a walking trail throughout the property, a central garden, a landscaped rain garden, 70 raised garden plots with a garden shed, a gazebo and an aviary adjacent to the walking trail.
A second development phase, consisting of 140 studio and one bedroom units in a split three- and four-storey building, would require the removal of the 80-unit residence. However, according to development documents filed with Saanich, the Society does not plan to move forward with the second phase for at least ten years.
Pending a successful rezoning expected later this year, construction could be underway by the end of 2016 or by mid-2017. C
