I think the new gateway green site design looks quite good. Also, I'm a big fan of Chard's upcoming tower at the old Mazda dealership, which is quite tall.
To my eye I would say the Gateway Green concept is a pleasant surprise, although we should probably hold our breath until after the CoV offers its unique brand of "design advice".
"Why does it have so many windows? Swap out at least 30% of the windows and replace them with plain panels."
"Why isn't the top level exactly the same as all the other levels?"
"Can you write the phrase: 'This is a strong horizontal line' across every horizontal line, to further emphasize the horizontal lines?"
and so forth...
To HarrisonGreene's point, I think Gateway Green and Chard's main tower at the White Spot site could actually be good. I'm still up in the air about the Telus building by the Crystal Garden.
I also didn't mind the Dodge dealership tower plan, but I'm really not digging Chard's Mazda lot stuff nor was I feeling all that great about the London Drugs towers.
There's also the lot beside the Jukebox. That project seemed like it had promise until it went cold.
1400 Quadra was a pleasant surprise for me. My perception based on the renderings was way off.
Methinks The Mod at View and Cook is similar to the new Dockside Green buildings re: being conventional and yet not being bland, because of those little things which give it some verve and appeal.
I'm not a fan of the highrise planned next door to View Towers. The tower portion just seems like it will be too plain and repetitive.
Anyway, just because any one individual happens to like or dislike a particular building doesn't mean the end of the world is around the corner.* Didn't a former CoV city planner say something to that effect? I don't like every house, I don't like every park, I don't like every tree. Heck, I wouldn't want to live in a world where everything is tailored to please grumpy old aastra or grumpy old Mike K.
*spoiler alert: the end of the world might actually be around the corner

Grumpy old Oxford Sutherland or grumpy old gumgum, maybe.
I forgot the Wedge. But then it's been taking so long, sometimes it seems like the builders themselves have also forgotten about it! (rim shot)
The Wedge has a lot going for it but I really wish they had made a more interesting choice re: the panel cladding.
