A supportive housing facility targeted at recovering addicts opens today in a former hotel complex on Douglas Street at Burnside Road.
The non-profit Vancouver-based PHS Community Services Society, also known as the Portland Hotel Society, will manage the day-to-day operations of the 51-unit former Super 8 Hotel at 2915 Douglas Street.
The provincial government has invested approximately $6.5-million into the purchase and remediation of the building, which included an interior restoration, a reconfiguration of the main entrance and the closure of a liquor store that had operated as a commercial tenant on the ground floor.
Spoons Diner, a breakfast eatery located along the building's Douglas Street frontage, plans to remain in-place.
PHS Community Services Society is the operator of multiple low-barrier and supportive housing projects in Vancouver. The organization also manages a low-barrier housing facility in the 800-block of Johnson Street in downtown Victoria. C
