BC Transit has announced two construction projects for their Victoria and Langford transit centres that will total nearly $11-million.
The Victoria transit centre, located between Douglas Street and Gorge Road at Garbally Road, will soon see the start of construction on a state-of-the-art paint and body shop along with seismic upgrades to the centre’s existing repair and maintenance facility.
BC Transit’s largest and busiest yard, the Gorge Road centre sees approximately 1,200 body and paint-related jobs per year, making it one of the province’s busiest transit vehicle repair facilities.
At BC Transit’s Langford transit centre, situated along Henry Eng Place near the eastern shore of Langford Lake, a new warehouse facility is now underway. The 4,000 square foot centralized stockroom will service BC Transit’s province-wide operations and enable the organization to serve its network of transit hubs in the timeliest and most. efficient manner possible.
“These upgrades in the Victoria region represent our shared commitment to providing seismically safe and operationally efficient transit solutions,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.
“Not only do these upgrades protect transit employees, they also help ensure the integrity of the local transit systems, which provide an essential service for hundreds of thousands of British Columbians.”
The total cost for both projects, including seismic upgrading at the Victoria maintenance facility, is budgeted at $10.9-million. Completion is scheduled for April of next year. C
