Victoria Intl. Airport generates nearly $900M in annual economic impact: study
Published January 17, 2018
A study commissioned by the Victoria Airport Authority has determined that Victoria International Airport's annual economic impact on British Columbia is nearly $900 million.
The findings by interVISTAS Consulting show that the Island's busiest airport generated 4,200 person years of employment, $270 million in wages throughout British Columbia, $420 million in gross domestic product and $880 million in economic output.
A total of 4,700 individuals are directly and indirectly employed through the airport's operations, which translates to 4,200 full-time equivalents (FTEs).
The last economic impact study was conducted in 2005 which at that time indicated Victoria International's economic output was $441 million with 2,920 FTEs.
“It is no surprise the overall increase in economic impact, given the growth in passenger numbers at the airport which have almost doubled since then, and the increase in the number of businesses that have chosen to operate on the airport property. Intuitively people understand the importance of an airport to the local community, but not necessarily the actual economic impact. We wanted to quantify the annual dollar amount, and when you see numbers approaching one billion dollars in annual impact, it drives home the importance of a vibrant and growing airport”, said Geoff Dickson, President and CEO of the Victoria Airport Authority.
Situated in North Saanich and near the town of Sidney, Victoria International Airport is Canada’s tenth busiest airport by passenger volumes and also by aircraft movements. The airport saw record volumes of passengers
in 2017 with nearly two million arriving and departing travellers passing through its gates. C
