It's no joke.

Calgary-based ultra low-cost carrier start-up Swoop plans to offer introductory fares as low as $0 dollars between Abbotsford and Hamilton, Ontario. After taxes and fees, the full cost would land at $7.50, otherwise what could be the lowest fare ever offered between the greater Vancouver and Toronto regions.

The Westjet no-frills subsidiary set to launch this summer has announced an introductory fare structure for its first wave of scheduled services to Abbotsford, Edmonton, Halifax, Hamilton and Winnipeg ranging in cost from $7.50 to $41, one-way.

The timeframe for Swoop's super-deals is limited and requires travellers to book by February 4th for flight dates between June 20 and December 15th. Only 500 tickets will be available for travel through September 4th and another 1,500 for travel between September 5th and December 15th, plus black-out dates throughout those periods.

Regular one-way fares between the five cities will be offered at $39 to $99 between June 20th and the end of the year. Black-out dates also apply.

Swoop won't be the only player on the ultra low-cost carrier block, however.

Vancouver-based Jetlines plans to launch services this summer with Abbotsford, Hamilton and Halifax on its route roster plus eventual expansion plans that include the B.C. capital. Fares, according to CEO Stan Gadek, will cost "as cheap as a pair of jeans." Meanwhile Kelowna-based Flair airlines, which started operations in 2016 as New Leaf, currently operates ultra low-cost services between Abbotsford, Edmonton, Hamilton, Kelowna, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg.
