A Save-On-Foods full-service grocery store is coming to the City of Colwood as part of a mixed-use residential and retail project at 1905-1913 Sooke Road.

Now under construction on Sooke Road at Goldstream Avenue, the Colwood Corners development by Vancouver-based Onni Group will feature the south Island’s ninth Save-On-Foods as its 38,000 square foot anchor tenant.

The store will be situated on the southern end of the Colwood Corners property at Jerome Road (with frontage onto Sooke Road) and occupy the ground floor of a multi-storey residential complex comprised of nearly 130 suites.

The Victoria offices of Cushman Wakefield, a global commercial real-estate brokerage and leasing firm, is handling the promotion of Colwood Corners’ remaining 125,000 square feet of available retail space and confirms that in addition to the new Save-On-Foods, London Drugs will continue to maintain a presence at the shopping centre.

Bordered by Sooke, Jerome and Belmont roads, the 12.5-acre Colwood Corners property was purchased by Onni in 2014 following the bankruptcy of real-estate development and investment firm League Assets Corporation.

The since-defunct Victoria-based developer secured approvals for an ambitious mixed-use community — dubbed Capital City Centre — that included a cluster of condo towers rising to 29-storeys, an office building and a large retail component. Construction of Capital City Centre’s first phase had begun in the fall of 2012 only to stall by the following summer.

With work re-started by Onni in 2018 on a significantly downscaled vision, Colwood Corner’s first phase will incorporate the remediation of an underground parking component built as part of League Assets' project, and the first wave of mixed-use buildings. Completion is planned for 2020.

Future phases, consisting of residential buildings, will add nearly 300,000 square feet of apartments to the project, although the unit counts have not been confirmed.

Langley-based Save-On-Foods has rapidly expanded throughout the Capital Region in recent years with newly-opened stores in downtown Victoria and in Langford. The chain also took over several former Safeway grocery stores within the last decade, bringing its existing operations to eight locations. C
