The Royal Oak Golf Club near Saanich Commonwealth Place may not reopen following this year's winter closure, according to a memorandum submitted to club members by operations staff.

What is unclear, however, is whether the closure would be permanent or an unexpected extension of the seasonal break. Calls by Citified to Royal Oak Golf Club's listed phone number have gone unanswered as have inquiries via Twitter and Facebook. What can be confirmed is the official website, GolfRoyalOak.com, does not list tee times for the upcoming spring season and membership information appears to have been removed.

If closed permanently the 27-acre nine-hole course, in operation since the mid-20th century, would become the second Victoria-area golf club to succumb to industry-wide declining membership rates and rising operational costs. Last fall Prospect Lake Golf Course, also in Saanich, closed after 41 years in business while Cedar Hill Golf Course, operated by the Municipality of Saanich, remains in operation following a much-needed boost in municipal subsidies. And a proposal to turn a portion of North Saanich's Glen Meadows Golf Course into a Rural Agricultural Neighbourhood with excess lands used for farming was nixed in 2015. A Glen Meadows representative confirms no development plans are currently afoot and the course will remain open.

This is a developing story. Please check this page for updates. C
