Commuters hoping for a near-term rail-based solution to traffic congestion between the Westshore and downtown Victoria will have to wait a little longer.
Transportation Minister Todd Stone announced today that the provincial government will be spearheading a study to determine the feasibility of commuter rail on southern Vancouver Island.
Last year land developer Ken Mariash, with the support of local politicians, launched a study to assess the merits of commuter rail between the Westshore and Vic West in the City of Victoria. That study case, the minster said, will now be taken over by the province and formally assessed.
"We have formed a working group which the province will lead. We will complete [the] business case with the goal being to finally get on with commuter rail between Langford and Vic West," Minister Stone said, adding that the province is "turning the concept that has been discussed so long into reality, and it starts today."
The provincial assessment is expected to be completed later this year.
If approved, a commuter rail route will connect Langford's Westshills community with Victoria's Vic West neighbourhood near downtown Victoria. C
