Following a lengthy excavation period, construction has begun on Alpha Project Developments’ 1400 Quadra Street project in downtown Victoria.

Rising to 14-storeys, the 113-suite purpose-built rental complex with approximately 3,500 square feet of ground floor commercial space has begun to rise at the intersection of Quadra and Johnson streets where it displaces a former used car dealership and an adjacent single storey retail building.

Designed by Victoria-based de Hoog Kierulf Architects, 1400 Quadra Street features a four-storey brick-clad podium with a recessed tower shaft. The top two floors are further recessed along the Quadra Street frontage and partially recessed along the Johnson Street frontage.

Residences will range from 391 square foot studio apartments to 883 square foot three-bedroom suites with offerings also available in one and two-bedroom configurations.

104 parking stalls will be situated in an underground parkade.

Construction, at the hands of Campbell Construction, is expected to complete in 2021.

Alpha Project Developments is one of Victoria’s most active large-scale development firms. The company built Yates Street’s 17-storey Legato condominium tower in the 900-block, the 10-storey Mondrian condominium tower in the 1000-block of Johnson Street, and Aria, a two-tower, 12-storey condominium building on Humboldt Street between Douglas and Blanshard streets.

The Johnson Street corridor has been one of the most active construction zones in downtown Victoria in recent years.

Immediately across the street Chard Development is building Vivid at the Yates, a 20-storey condominium adjacent to The Yates on Yates, another 20-storey condominium with frontage onto Yates Street.

One block east Cox Developments is finalizing construction of 989 Johnson, a two tower condominium of 17 and 15-storeys. Across the street from 989 Cox Developments is pursuing municipal approvals for a 15-storey rental tower, dubbed 1400 Vancouver Street, on the former McCall’s Funeral Services property. Further east Cox Developments has plans to develop a 10-storey residential building adjacent to Alpha Project’s Mondrian building, while across the street Tenfold Projects is building The Wade condominium at the intersection of Johnson and Cook streets.

Immediately across Johnson Street opposite The Wade, Chard Development is seeking approvals for Yates Street Plaza, a multi-building proposal spanning along Cook Street between Yates and Johnson streets. And last but not least, Developer Kang & Gill is building The Row, a low-rise condominium on Johnson Street at Chambers Street. C
