Victoria-based retro-themed burger and shake chain Big Wheel Burger is once again in expansion mode, according to company co-owner Calen McNeil.

“We’re taking over the Quizno’s space at Vic West’s West Side Village,” McNeil says.

The upcoming Vic West eatery, situated along the 100-block of Wilson Street just a stone’s throw from the Dockside Green and Railyards developments, will be the company's third location following a 2016 expansion into Saanich's Gateway Village, which itself was designed to include a commissary kitchen to supply multiple Victoria locations.

“We’ve had our eyes on an Esquimalt or Vic West location for quite some time, actually. We also looked to the Westshore and were ready to commit to a space there, but ultimately we decided to hold back and focus on Vic West after expanding into Saanich, which was a key move for us with its larger size and faciities,” McNeil said.

The Vic West location's opening, McNeil confirms, will coincide with the May Long Weekend, and with seating for 35 patrons, the design and feel of the eatery will resemble the original Cook Street Village location opened in 2011.

As for the company’s unique business and ingredient sourcing practices, McNeil says Big Wheel’s commitment to healthy, locally raised meats and environmental focus will carry through to its third location together with several new options to its burger line-up.

“Our commitment to Big Wheel’s social and environmental endeavours will continue, it’s what helps define what we do. In fact we’re also introducing vegan options to our menu, in addition to our vegetarian options, and the Vic West location’s opening will coincide with those changes.” C
