Victoria architect Franc D’Ambrosio’s vision for a waste water treatment facility at Esquimalt’s McLoughlin Point has been revealed in a series of artist’s renderings.
The striking, unorthodox concept for what would have been a high-profile industrial facility on the shores of the Inner Harbour was achieved through the combined efforts of an international team of engineers and infrastructure specialists.
D’Ambrosio describes the inspiration behind his design as such:
“The architectural strategy embraced the industrial nature of the facility. It consisted of a series of 184 concrete columns forming a palisade around the process and operation buildings. The buildings housing operational and administrative functions engage the columns, creating a visually calm and collected interface between the industrial facility and the sensitive harbour waterfront.”
McLoughlin Point was identified by the Capital Regional District (CRD) several years ago as the ideal location for a regional sewage treatment facility. In response Esquimalt’s mayor and council rejected the CRD’s plans and forced the regional government to consider alternatives elsewhere in the region. Several design concepts for the plant were released, although D’Ambrosio’s is arguably the most architecturally refined and stimulating. C
