The region’s tallest building outside of the City of Victoria has been approved at Carey Road and Ravine Way in Saanich.
Councillors gave their blessing on Tuesday evening to an 14-storey purpose-built rental tower atop a three-storey retail and parking podium on the northwest corner of Uptown Shopping Centre.
134-units of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and townhome residences will get underway next year as part of the shopping centre’s fourth and last phase of development. Apartment layouts will range between 600 and 700 square feet, while seven two-level, two-bedroom townhomes will be available in the 1,000 square foot range.
The building’s two levels of retail space totalling 55,000 square feet will front onto a portion of Carey Road and Uptown’s northwest entranceway, bringing the development’s total footprint to just over one million square feet.
Developer Morguard recently completed Uptown's 40,000 square foot third phase anchored by a Whole Foods Market grocery store – the first on Vancouver Island – which opens in the first week of November.
Coinciding with the completion of the third phase an access road was built between the Trans Canada Highway and Carey Road for northbound traffic. Prior to road network improvements northbound traffic could only enter the Uptown property via two laneways and direct access to Carey Road was prohibited. C
